The Korea Widows Sons

Grand Chapter

Stoney and Fester were both very active riders in Korea. They sponsored a Poker Run to support a local orphanage. This event was very successful and caught the attention of Tim Walley who was the Right Worshipful Master of Truman Lodge. He had heard about Widows Sons and asked Stoney and Fester to start a chapter in Korea. Stoney wrote the by-laws in accordance with the Scottish Constituted requirements. Dave Hudson (PM Truman Lodge) edited the draft to ensure it met Scottish Constitution requirements. While Stoney and Fester were starting their chapter in Pyoung Teak they became unaware that Bam was also trying to start a WS chapter in Seoul at the same time. They realized two people were trying to start two separate chapters in Korea and asked Bam if he knew Stoney and Fester. Bam contacted Fester. It was at this time that the two groups came together to form the Widows Sons in Korea.

We were authorized to start the Korean Grand Chapter of the Widows Sons. Stoney and Fester received clarification that they could go ahead go ahead and form a chapter and WS would issue the Charter. The original member decided not to officially start the chapter until we received the charter. This was determined because we did not believe we would receive official recognition from the MC's in the area without it.

Fester left Korea for a new position in the state of Washington. While in Washington, Fester started the first WS chapter in Washington. After Fester left Korea the idea of starting a WS chapter in Korea had fallen to the wayside until Bam took the lead on getting it going again. Stoney, D-fer and Bam made several attempts to get the original charter from the coordinator. Stoney finally received the Charter exactly 1 year after it was initially filed.

Cable Guy and Stoney arranged to meet with the local MC's and RC's in the area to reaffirm the formation of the WS in Korea. This was required as it had been several months since Stoney and Fester had the original meetings with the local MC’s.

On 30 October 2010 the Korea Grand Chapter of the Widows Sons held its patch in party and its initial annual run to the Task Force Smith Memorial. This event was very successful as we had over 75 riders and all the MCs and RC in Korea had representatives in attendance. We also received support from local lodges who wanted to be part of history. Stoney, Cable Guy, Bam, D-fer, Top-Gawn, and Zombie were the original six members of the club. Fester was also considered one of the original members because of all the work he put into getting the chapter started Rod Rothwell (PM Lodge Han Yang) helped out immensely with set up the first meeting and the follow on cookout/party event.

The first WS officers were Stoney as President, D-fer as VP, Cable Guy as Treasurer, Zombie as Secretary, Top-Gawn as SOA, and Bam as Guardian of Membership.

Since the start of the WS in Korea our membership has continued to grow with the addition of the following new WS: Boomerang, P-man, Grub, Pathfinder, Red-I, Casper, Shortstop and newest member Painter. Members come from the Masonic lodges in Korea; Han Yang and Truman Lodge from the Scottish Grand Lodge, and MacArthur Lodge from the Philippines Grand Lodge. Some members are from stateside lodges that are working and living in Korea.

Besides meeting face to face we use mobile phones, email, and facebook to keep in touch and organize all events and rides. The majority of our members are soldiers, government employees, contractors, and expats who live and work in Korea. Because of the location of the various members the monthly meetings are alternated between Seoul and Pyoung Teak Korea. With our membership growing and the distance between the largest numbers of WS members, it will not be long before we start a second chapter in Korea.

Since the first ride the Korea Grand Chapter of Widows Sons has participated in other charity and Memorial rides, poker runs and held its first annual KWS Task Force Smith Ride in a downpour. Since our first day our club has enjoyed the support and approval of the local communities, MCs and RCs. Because of the good deeds we are doing and the positive image we are projecting as Masons we also enjoy the respect and admiration of all Masons in Korea. We have brought membership to the blue lodge because upstanding men and riders see us and want to be part of Widows Sons.

Most members are American and ride Harleys, but as long as your bike is 750 cc or above you are welcome to ride and hang out with us. If you are a master mason living and working in Korea and you would like to become a member of WS or you are just an upstanding man and want information about becoming a Master Mason contact Lodge Han Yang Secretary Kevin “Boomerang” at hanyangmason@hotmail.com and he will point you in the right direction.
