A BLAST FROM THE PAST;
2nd ANNUAL SUGAR RUN
Sugar was a chronic diabetic (that’s how he got the name “Sugar”) , and
was at the annual “Romeoville 4th of July Bash” when he was
taken to the Grand Lodge in the sky. He received the wrong insulin and
when he took it, he had a seizure and died. His wife and a few local
bikers set up the first Sugar Run a few months later in 1998.
The first benevolent act of the founding Grand Chapter of Widows Sons
was in Illinois, in January, of the year 1999. A group Widows Sons made
up of Carl A Davenport, Robert Blixt, Scott Pisani, and the late Jeff
Burbridge, unified with members of the Sugar Run staff at Leo’s Bar and
Grill in Romeoville, Illinois to set up the 2nd Annual Sugar
Run to raise funds for a college fund for Sugar’s children.
The American Diabetes Association, the Romeoville Police and Fire
Department, The Mayor, and several pub owners from Romeoville and the
surrounding communities were invited to the second meeting. A person was
appointed to solicit prizes from local businesses to raffle. The meeting
was a success.
At the third meeting NEXTEL showed up and provided walkie talkies to
monitor the run. Three towing companies also donated towing services for
the route of the run. The Sugar Run received publicity from the local
and surrounding newspapers and radio stations. A promise of donated food
and cooks was given by the Romeoville P.T.A. and school board, and 3
hours of music was donated by two local rock bands, all in the memory of
The Widows sons Illinois Grand Chapter helped set up the 2nd
annual Sugar Run. Over 400 bikes attended and the ride was a success.
The ride has been held every year since. Now there is around 1100 bikes
and it has become a Romeoville event with the Village of Romeoville
participating. All Sugar’s children have a college fund, and the
SugarRun now donates annually to the Silver Cross Hospital Diabetes
Center. Below is an add for the 2006 SugarRun.
